Vivienne Westwood Shoes Exhibit 1973-2012 steps into Tokyo

Don’t forget to head to the basement of Omotesando Hills for the Vivienne Westwood Shoes 1973-2012 exhibit. It’s been traveling the world and has now planted itself in Tokyo until Jan 9th. It’s the perfect time to check it out over the holiday break!

There are an astounding 200 pairs on display, and I heard rumor a lot of the samples were from Vivienne’s own closet, in her own size. I feel like Vivienne Westwood has made more of a fashion revolution through her shoes than any other piece of clothing (not to shame the saturn ashtray necklace or anything). The buckled pirate boot, the hammerhead toe, the rockinghorse shoes (made famous by Japanese goth-loli’s back in the day. I think this is how I came to learn about Vivienne Westwood myself)... And although they were mostly inspired by historical items themselves, in the world of pret a porter, they will forever be known as Westwood shoes.

I saw these boots and thought, “Now THIS is the epitome of a Vivienne Westwood shoe!” The plaid, the bootie, the heel. Perfection. Looking closer, I see it’s from a new collection. D’oh! Can a brand new shoe really embodify the brand? I suppose the Westwood aesthetic is really just that recognizable and implanted in my brain.

These “Super Elevated Gillie”s are from the 1993 Anglomania collection, and are 10-inch heels. The monsters put up a fight with Naomi Campbell and infamously came out victorious when she stumbled on the catwalk. Their own place in history.

I think a lot of fans will love the goodies on sale just for the exhibit. The mini bags are splendid (reminds me of the mini Armadillo shoes that went on sale at the McQueen exhibit. Why do I have the urge to want all the miniscule things?). Lots of other goodies as well. Don’t miss it!

Also, did you know there is a Vivienne Westwood documentary? It was just released here on Nov 30th, it’s called “Do It Yourself!” A roving look at the past, present and future of Vivienne Westwood, with Eng. and Japanese subtitles.

Tickets to the Shoes exhibit cost 1,000 yen for adults with discounts for students.

  2. Quando vejo esses sapatos monstruosos só me lembro das bonecas Bratz! Parece que agora até que elas estão vindo com uns sapatinhos normais, mas no começo a boneca era só pé e boca! Haha!
