August 1-3, 2010 – New York, NY: This year, Moda Manhattan and AccessoriesTheShow were met with enthusiasm from retailers and buyers alike. While the Sunday start seemed to affect attendee numbers during the first day, designers reported that business picked up on the second and third day, giving brands still affected by the recession’s spurn a little pick-me-up on the sales floor. And to make it even easier to peruse this season’s picks, Moda and AccessoriesTheShow were located at the Javits Center — both on one floor!
Retailers proudly displayed their fine wares for the Holiday 2010 and Resort 2011 seasons. Moda offered a few special surprises: a concept released just two weeks ago, we saw a brand new booth for casual diffusion line Mel, dreamed up by Brazilian footwear purveyors Melissa. The new inspired brand offers the same signature PVC bubblegum-scented shoes but sells more relaxed styles for the muse on the go: sweet little wedges, sensible ballet flats and chic sandals. Creators of Glam and GlamNoir unveiled their Glam Naturale line, an eco-chic collection of keychains, wallets, messenger sidebags and hippie braided strands, as well as a cuter than cute sketched owl logo, etched on most of the items. PlastiChic showed of its hi-hued tourmaline collection of interchangeable watches and wristbands have been featured in Vogue’s accessory guide and also in Glamour. PlastiChic’s cool collection of summer sunglasses have a trendy wayfarer shape and bamboo arms. While the shades haven’t yet hit retail stores, they are already getting attention from various celebrities. Vintage Reign, a Florida-based brand to watch, launched merely eight months ago and is a hit amongst the young and fashionable set with buttery soft leathers and a playful mix of bright colors and unique animal prints — the kind of risk-taking that makes them stand out from the basic bag and purse crowd.
While newcomer lines dazzled accessory buyers and editors, trade-show regulars also offered attention-grabbing items for the Holiday and Resort seasons. California brand Toss boasted chic totes and giftable candy cane reusable eco-friendly bags with removable monograms for extra special personalization, perfect for Holiday 2010. Moksha Fine Wovens displayed a bevy of cabbage roses and paisley-printed fine merino wool and linen items, and is a favorite to Hillary Clinton who famously wore a Moksha coat during her election campaign. A gaudy, yet gorgeous, selection of sparkly accessories were on display from glamorous mainstay brand Jimmy Crystal. The brand is looking to young blood to help them create cool, yet classy, pieces and have taken designer rookie Wendy Chen under their wing. She has created spectacular sparkling star-shaped clip-ons, 4G iPhone cases and cute clutches bedazzled with Swarovski crystals.
