Fun! Fun! Fashion! Knock your socks off

"Come on sun, give us a break! You're overdoing it. Take it easy. Relax. Cool it." With all this hot weather we've been having, I feel like giving the sun a few words of advice.

So how is everyone holding up?

Sandwiched between the merciless sun and the burning hot concrete, I'm having a great time taking snapshots in the street.

Japanese summers are hot, but it's the humidity that really gets to you. It makes people want to get out in their sandals and zori (Japanese thongs). But this year's a bit different than usual. Let me focus on what people are wearing on their feet.

The latest fashion is for young women to wear socks with their sandals and high-heeled shoes. You look skeptical. "Sandals with socks?" you ask. Let's take a closer look.

Socks come in all sorts. What types in particular, for example?

If you look closely, you'll see lots of women wearing frilled socks, see-through socks and socks with rather distinctive textiles. It feels nostalgic to see frilled socks these days. We remember wearing them when we were kids. Maybe it's the nostalgia, but lots of people are wearing them. The secret is to be daring and choose different colored socks and shoes. This focuses attention on the feet. The most common length is a bit above the ankles.

It may be more coordinated to wear socks and shoes of the same color, but it's also boring. There's nothing distinctive or stylish. The fashion for footwear this year is to be a bit quirky.

By the way, this "sandals and socks" thing seems to be all the rage overseas, too.

See America's Vogue web magazine at (http://www.style.com/stylefile/2010/07/the-dos-and-donts-of-socks-with-sandals/).

Although the style had appeared in brand collections, I thought perhaps the hurdle was a bit high for everyday wear. But you've got to hand it to the powerful girls of Tokyo. They took up the challenge with courage and have turned it into a casual style.

When I asked women in the street, they told me they became interested in this style last autumn or winter. Those who were fast off the mark got into it then, but it really began shifting from minor to major this spring and summer. To me, the fact that it suddenly became major at this time of year has something to do with the Japanese climate.

I suspect lots of women found that in Japan's humid summer, high heels and sandals were too uncomfortable. It's not as if you can just take them off. Socks are great, because they get over this problem in a smart and stylish way.

I heard comments such as, "I was reluctant at first, but now I'd be more embarrassed if I wasn't wearing them." In comparison with bare feet, by placing the focus on the socks, the emphasis is taken off the leg line. "They cover up complexes about leg shape," one of the women said. I see. That certainly is a good point!

Another thing to note is the cost performance of socks. Compared with a pair of shoes or other items of clothing, they come at a relatively manageable price, so you can be relaxed about taking up the challenge. It's risky choosing individualistic patterns and colors for larger items of clothing, but there is no problem being a bit flamboyant with something as tiny as a pair of socks.

So if you've got some money and a little bit of curiosity and you don't mind taking a bit of a risk, how about trying something new and chic this summer? New challenges might be nerve-wracking, but they're exciting to the same degree. My wish is that fashion will fill all your hearts with this excitement.

Well, that's it for today from me, Rei Shito. Ciao!

Young women mix frilled and see-through socks or combine socks with tights.

A woman matches unique patterns with these Kiwanda socks.

See-through grid-pattern socks with Melissa sandals - the accent is on the contrasting black and wisteria colors.

Socks make these red wedge soles even more striking. Adding socks takes the focus off the leg line.

Matching red socks with red check sunglasses--the accent is on the feet, but balance is achieved by wearing the same color on the head.

There are also high socks proponents, though they are few in number.

The socks boom is also beginning to take off with flat shoes. A sense of unity is achieved by combining frilled socks with a frilled corsage.
